Zhandos Agmanov victorious at Czech Open 2023 Pardubice, Lalit Babu second

IM Zhandos Agmanov scored 7.5/9 to win Czech Open Pardubice 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Eight players - GM Lalit Babu, IM Christopher Noe (GER), GM Jiri Stocek (CZE), GM Helgi Ass Gretarsson (ISL), IM Jakub Kosakowski (POL), FM Adelard Bai (TPE), GM G N Gopal and IM Evgenios Ioannidis (GRE) scored 7/9 each. Lalit was placed second, Noe third. The eventual champion, Zhandos suffered his sole loss of the event against Lalit in Round 7. Gopal is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He was placed ninth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the event was 200000 CZK. The top three prizes were 60000, 40000 and 30000 CZK along with a trophy each respectively. Lalit gets the better of the champion

It is believed that the next best thing to winning a tournament is to beat the eventual champion. After winning Czech Open G1 Rapid 2023, GM Lalit Babu managed to beat the winner of the tournament - IM Zhandos Agmanov (KAZ) in the seventh round. GM G N Gopal also scored an impressive 7/9 to finish ninth according to tie-breaks.

A total of 291 players including 14 GMs, 35 IMs, 2 WGMs and 12 WIMs took part from 41 countries across the world in this nine-day nine round Rating Open tournament. It was organized by AVE-Kontakt s.r.o., Pardubice at Congress Center Ideon in Pardubice, Czech Republic from 21st to 29th July 2023. The time control of the event was 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
