Praloy and Bristy win 42nd West Bengal State Sub-Junior 2019

by Shahid Ahmed - 16/06/2019

Fourth seeded Praloy Sahoo won his maiden State title by winning 42nd West Bengal State Sub-Junior open by scoring 7.0/8. There was a three-way tie, however Praloy came out at the top due to a better tie-break score. Sanket Chakravarty and Arpan Das paid the price of a quick draw as they had to settle for 2nd and 3rd place respectively. WCM Bristy Mukherjee retained her title by winning the tournament second year in-a-row. Three players Bristy, Mehendi and Anoushka scored 6.0/7. Mehendi Sil and Anushka Gupta hwere placed 2nd and 3rd according to their tie-breaks. Total 321 players participated in the event making it the biggest State Championship of West Bengal in history. Photo: Shahid Ahmed

Praloy had a brilliant start with 5.0/5, drew two games and both were fighting draws and finished with 7.0/8

Praloy Sahoo finished at the 2nd position in National School under-15 open category, a couple of months ago. He needed to win in the last round to be sure of the title, however a draw meant his championship fate will be decided based on top board result. Surprisingly in the final round, top board game ended up in a quick draw, resulting in Praloy needing only a draw which he did after a hard fought battle against Soumyajit Das Jr.

Bristy Mukherjee started strong with four consecutive wins, then she drew with Mehendi Sil who finished as a runner-up for the second consecutive year. She was unable to score a win in the final round, however due to her better tie-break score, Bristy emerged as the champion.
