Dibya Jyoti Sarkar wins 3rd Maa Manik Memorial Rating Open 2024
Dibya Jyoti Sarkar, Ishan Das, Iftikar Alom Mazumdar, Neelabh Jyoti Borthakur, Bijit Chetia and Sakhawat Hussain scored 7/9 each at 3rd Maa Manik Memorial Rating Open 2024. Dibya Jyoti won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. The remaining five secured second to sixth position respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹175000. The top three prizes were ₹24000, ₹18000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The six-day rating tournament was organized by Chess Family, Agartala from 21st to 26th January 2024 at Chess Hall, NSRCC Complex in Agartala, Tripura. Dibya Jyoti Sarkar was the sole leader 7/8 heading into the final round. Bijit Chetia was the sole player trailing him by a half point at 6.5/8. They were followed by eight players at 6/8 each. Despite a last round loss against Sakhawat, Dibya Jyoti became champion as Bijit drew the game. He was the only player who could surpass him. Ishan defeated Kingshuk Debnath and Umashankar Dutta lost to Iftikar Alom Mazumdar. Ishan and Iftikar were placed second and third respectively. 11-year-old Shakya Singha Modak is the youngest top ten finisher of the event. He scored 6.5/9 to finish at ninth place.
A total of 98 players took part from various states across the country and one from Bangladesh. The six-day nine round Rating tournament was organized by Chess Family, Agartala at Chess Hall, NSRCC Complex in Agartala, Tripura from 21st to 26th January 2024. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
