Tata Steel 2024 R10: Gukesh and Abdusattorov are the coleaders

by Shahid Ahmed - 25/01/2024

D Gukesh decimated Alexander Donchenko (GER) in Round 10 of 86th Tata Steel Masters 2024 to maintain his lead. The Germany no.3 consumed a lot of time in the opening when Gukesh went 12...Nb6. Later, Gukesh found a nice tactic to gain material and converted his advantage without any difficulty. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) also scored a win over Max Warmerdam (NED). Both him and Gukesh are now the coleaders 6.5/10, followed by Anish Giri (NED) and R Praggnanandhaa at 6/10 each. Praggnanandhaa drew against Vidit Gujrathi. Ian Nepomniachtchi scored the only other win in the Mastes against the world champion, Ding Liren (CHN). Leon Luke Mendonca drew against Hans Niemann (USA) after 112 moves. This is his second consecutive 110+ move game. Today is the last rest day. Round 11 starts tomorrow Friday 25th January at 2 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. Photo: Lennart Ootes/Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2024

Leon Luke Mendonca plays his second consecutive 110+ move game

"I am playing good chess that I am happy about. Always the last three rounds are the most important... I will spend the rest day and try to be in good shape for the last three rounds." - D Gukesh on maintaining his lead after his win over Alexander Donchenko (GER).

Donchenko - Gukesh: 0-1

D Gukesh (2725) played two Classical rated games against Alexander Donchenko (GER, 2643). He lost the first one and drew the second. At this event, Gukesh scored his first Classical win over the Germany no.3. He was feeling optimistic after 12...Nb6 as his opponent started consuming a lot of time.

Position after 14...dxc4

After 14.Bxc4 dxc4 Gukesh felt that his plan is super easy b5, Ne5 coming. "His attack although with all the pawns looks scary, it wasn't going anywhere." - Gukesh mentioned in a post-game interview.

Nepomniachtchi - Liren: 1-0

"First of all, I'd like to mention that I guess from the beginning of the game, I was looking at him. He seemed to be like visibly unwell. So there is not so much to be proud of." - Ian Nepomniachtchi on his first Classical win against Ding Liren (CHN) after the World Championship match in 2023.

Warmerdam - Abdusattorov: 0-1

Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB, 2727) has never lost a Classical rated game against Max Warmerdam (NED, 2625). That statistic remains unchanged.

Position after 24...f4!

Abdusattorov made a nice pawn sacrifice 24...f4! 25.exf4 Nd3. "...When I got this big advantage, I started to play worse than him. He played very poorly until that point but yeah when I got this advantage, I played even worse. I think I was in trouble at some point. I guess instead of 41.Nxa6 he could have played 41.Bf3 and I am in trouble. I didn't like my position there. But he took on a6 and then I am not worse after Nxa6 I think..." - Abdusattorov talking about his win in the post-game interview.
